Narayan Bhusal, CTP, Went from Intern to Global Treasury Manager in 9 Years

His treasury journey began almost by chance. While pursuing his MBA, Narayan Bhusal enrolled in a CTP prep course — a move that would change everything. There, he met his future boss, who offered him an internship at the Treasury Department of Hillenbrand in Stuttgart, Germany. That opportunity, sparked by a shared commitment to learning, became his entry point into the field.

Over time, the combination of academic grounding, professional certification and hands-on experience set the stage for Narayan to attain a position with the treasury team of Hillebrand, where he grew and climbed the ladder to Treasury Manager. What drew Narayan to treasury — and keeps him engaged — is the real-time impact of the work, from payments and FX transactions to interest income and expense, there is a ripple effect throughout the company.

“Every day brings decisions that carry weight,” he said, “and it’s that complexity that energizes me.”

Narayan credits much of his success to the mentorship of former managers who saw his potential early on and supported his career growth. Their guidance helped shape both his technical skills and professional outlook, laying the foundation for a successful career.

The Beingness of a Global Treasury Manager

Today, Narayan serves as Global Treasury Manager for Philips Emergency Care, a role that draws on nearly a decade of hands-on experience across four treasury roles in both Europe and the U.S. His work spans geographies, currencies and time zones, but at the core, it’s always about building a strong foundation and asking the right questions: What are we doing? Why are we doing it? And how can we do it better?

To succeed in treasury, Narayan says you need more than just technical skills. A finance-focused degree is a great start, but what sets people apart is their ability to apply structured thinking, embrace continuous improvement and stay agile in a fast-moving environment. For example, he sees technological advancement as one of the most exciting — and complex — forces shaping the future of treasury.

“Technological advancement and our adoption of it is a very hot topic in the treasury space,” said Narayan . “The key is finding the right balance between the organization’s needs, available resources, and the real-world benefits of its adoption.”

He’s proud of the career he’s built so far — one marked by global experience, trusted mentorship and a mastery of treasury operations. Looking ahead, Narayan plans to expand his expertise in capital markets, funding and strategic risk management, with a focus on cross-currency swaps and net investment hedging.

Before He Had His First Full-time Job, He Had His CTP

While working on his International MBA at Coburg University in Germany, Narayan enrolled in a CTP (Certified Treasury Professional) prep course. Through the course, he met his future boss, who happened to be preparing for the exam at the same time. They took the test on the same day and passed — Narayan earned his CTP credential before he’d even finished his MBA.

Earning the CTP credential at the start of his career sent a clear signal about Narayan's dedication to the profession — and gave him credibility right out the gate. Even before landing his first full-time treasury role, he had already demonstrated both capability and commitment.

But that was just the beginning. As Narayan said, “We can never stop growing, and one of the best ways to keep growing is continuous learning.”

He views continuous learning as essential for anyone in treasury, and the CTP as a powerful method for expanding knowledge, as well as a forum for sharing ideas and staying current in an evolving field. It’s why he encourages anyone with aspirations in treasury to pursue the designation.

"The CTP is more than a credential,” Narayan said. “It’s a catalyst for growth.”
